Well Met proud to host first-ever public AGM session for Liberty at Cloth Hall Court

Well Met, the conferencing office of Leeds Beckett University, is proud to host a conference on behalf of Liberty that will be opened to non-members for the first time.

The Liberty Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM), takes place at Cloth Hall Court in Leeds on Saturday 18th May 2019. While the formal AGM takes place in the morning and is for members only, the afternoon conference, that will include a debate on Technology and Human Rights and a panel discussion about Disability and Human Rights, is open to everyone.

Liberty is an independent membership organisation that challenges injustice, defends freedom and campaigns to make sure everyone in the UK is treated fairly. Liberty has a rich 85-year history of making the UK a fairer, more equal place when it was founded in 1934 after the peaceful protests of the Hunger Marches.

The organisation isn’t affiliated to any political party, nor does it receive any government funding, meaning it is free to robustly challenge unjust laws, policies and practices in defence of human rights and civil liberties in the UK. The organisation has 10,000 members and 50,000 supporters in the UK and the AGM helps Liberty to determine its policy for the year.

Clare Vidler Conference Manager at Well Met, said: “We are proud to support this historic organisation and landmark event that will see the conference element of this meeting open to the public for the first time. We are looking forward to sharing our Grade II listed building with over 300 delegates who want to make a difference shaping decisions around civil liberties.”

The Liberty AGM is held in a different city across the UK every other year so that people across the UK can be involved in the important decision-making process for the future of human rights. The organisation is looking to be more inclusive, more diverse and more democratically accountable.

Communications Director, Yuba Bessaoud, explains: “We’ve been a membership organisation since we were established 85 years ago, so our members are at the heart of all we do. And the AGM is the key event of each year, as it offers us the rare chance to gather together in the same place.

“Our members know that the best debates are had when there are a range of diverse voices, with as many heard as possible, especially those who may not have been heard before. That’s why, for the first time ever, we’re opening up the afternoon of our AGM to anyone who wants to come and talk about some of the most important and pressing issues of the day.”
